The Trixie Foundation: Our History

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

In 1990, Randy Skaggs began what would become a lifelong mission to make a difference for animals in need. What started as a small rescue effort quickly grew, fueled by a deep belief that every animal, no matter their past, deserved a future. With limited resources but unlimited heart, Randy began taking in unwanted animals, providing food, shelter, and second chances — and soon, The Trixie Foundation was born.

A SANCTUARY, NOT JUST A SHELTER

From the beginning, The Trixie Foundation wasn’t just a place to house animals. It was a refuge for those who had nowhere else to go — a true sanctuary where every life mattered and where healing, love, and dignity came first.

Over the years, The Trixie Foundation has grown, and while much has changed, that spirit remains the same. To this day, it’s a sanctuary, not a shelter. A place where animals are safe, not waiting for adoption, but truly home — a true “care-for-life” sanctuary.

At The Trixie Foundation, “home” isn’t a temporary stop; it’s a forever promise.

THE MISSION TAKES SHAPE

As more animals arrived, so did a clearer purpose. The work evolved beyond rescue — it was about changing the bigger picture. The mission became not only to care for animals in need, but to advocate, educate, and inspire a more compassionate world for all animals.

MORE THAN RESCUE — REAL CHANGE

Over time, the foundation expanded its efforts to address the larger, systemic issues companion animals face. The focus grew to include spay/neuter programs, community outreach, education, and advocacy to help create lasting change at the source.

The goal has always been the same: fewer homeless animals, safer communities, and a future where every animal has a chance to be loved, not just rescued.

ALL LIFE MATTERS

While dogs and cats have always been at the heart of our work, The Trixie Foundation’s mission has always embraced all animals in need. From horses, cows, goats, chickens, and pigs to birds, wildlife, and even the smallest creatures, the foundation believes every life has value and deserves respect and care.

THE EDUCATION MISSION

Education has always been a cornerstone of the foundation’s work. Through school programs, community outreach, and resources, The Trixie Foundation strives to teach kindness, responsibility, and respect for all living beings.

By inspiring compassion in young people and empowering adults with knowledge, the hope is to create a brighter, kinder future for animals for generations to come.

THE JOURNEY TODAY — AND THE STRONGER TOMORROW

The journey hasn’t always been easy. There have been challenges, heartbreaking cases, and moments that tested our resolve. But through it all, the support of a compassionate community, dedicated people, and a shared belief in a better world for animals have kept us going.

Today, The Trixie Foundation continues to grow, expand its reach, and remain committed to making a difference — for every animal, every day.

THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE IT POSSIBLE

None of this would be possible without the incredible people who believe in this mission — our volunteers, supporters, donors, and advocates. Their kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication make everything we do possible.

The 36-year-old nonprofit organization is more than a foundation — it’s a community. A community united by a simple belief: that animals deserve a better world, and together, we can help create it.

A NATIONWIDE LEGACY OF LOVE

Although our home will always be in the beautiful mountains of northeastern Appalachian Kentucky, The Trixie Foundation’s reach extends far beyond our local community.

Our mission, programs, and advocacy efforts touch lives across the country, and our story has inspired supporters from coast to coast. No matter where they are, The Trixie Foundation’s supporters are part of the same compassionate family, working toward a kinder, safer world for animals everywhere.

THE NEXT 25 YEARS AND BEYOND

As we look to the future, the next 25 years are filled with both exciting opportunities and a continued commitment to our core values. We will keep rescuing, educating, advocating, and striving for a world where all animals are valued and treated with the kindness and respect they deserve.

WHY THE TRIXIE FOUNDATION MATTERS

“Trixie” isn’t just a place — it’s a promise. A promise to always stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves. A promise to keep fighting for a more compassionate world. And a promise to never give up on the belief that a better future for animals is possible.

LOOKING AHEAD

The work isn’t finished. There are still countless animals in need, broken systems to change, and hearts to reach. But with the continued support of our community, we believe the next chapter will bring even greater impact, deeper change, and a brighter future for animals everywhere.

The story of The Trixie Foundation is still being written — and no matter what challenges lie ahead, one thing will always be true:
